The Hand
This activity is very simple to make and can be made by younger students and older primary students. It may even be useful for a human biology teacher in upper school to use when teaching anatomy as it encourages students to think about the structure and function of their hands and how they are so amazingly flexible.
Questions to ask.
- How do you get the size of the hand the same as yours? (early childhood/design)
- What do you think the straws represent in your hand? (primary/function)
- What do you think the string represents in your hand? (primary/function)
- Where do you attach the string to at the top of the fingers? (early childhood/design)
- Why do you need to cut the straws into pieces? (primary/design) What happens if you do not cut the straws? (primary/function)
- How can you make the fingers move? (function)
- Look at your model, how many bones are there in each of your 'fingers'? How do you know? (primary/function) How could you find out? (primary/function)
